movie review
So, we watched the old version of Moulin Rouge in class last week.

I'm obviously not an art film person.

Anyway, the story is about Henri Toulouse-Lautrec, a famous artist of his time. He's one of the greats that made the Moulin Rouge famous through poster designs. When he was a young boy, he took a terrible fall that badly damaged his legs. As a result, they stopped growing, leaving him at the height of 13-year-old boy. He had difficulty walking because of it as well. As a result, he found respite in sitting and painting. After deciding that he was never going to find someone because of his height (or lack thereof), he left his home and heritage as the Count and went to Paris to find a living.

It's a tragic story, and could probably be played out very well. However, I found the acting dry, the dialog slow, and it became difficult for me to stay awake. The constant theme of rejection was difficult as well. Henri was so convinced that no one could love him because of his height that he chased everyone away. While that was probably true, it became hard to watch through a whole movie.

Of course, my opinion of the movie may have been colored because we were in class, but there have been plenty of times that I've enjoyed a movie in class, so I doubt that was the issue.

more testing blues
So, I had another test this week. I got an 'A' on it, tho'. It was for Intro to Computers. However, I've got another history test next week. I'm not looking forward to that.

I don't know if I want to watch the movies he wants us to watch for extra credit. I'm like, 'When the hell am I supposed to watch that?' Figures. It can't be something easy, like a small research project or something. He gave us Gangs of New York and we're supposed to study the character of Boss Tweed and how he was affected by John Nast, the political cartoonist. Then, for the other test, we have Freda with Selma Hayek and Pollack with Ed Harris. Of course, making up the last test is apparently out of the question.

Figures.

work work work
I'm so bored at work. I finished up the lists they wanted me to do. Now I'm basically doing busy work and I'm on the damn phones again. I hate the phones with a passion. I'm sick of lying for these people that refuse to answer their calls. It's frustrating.

I *so* don't want to answer the phones again. It's one of the things that made me nuts last time.

birthday-ness
So, tomorrow's 26. I'm so thrilled... {{lazy waves a flag}} Yeah... anyway...

I might go into the city tomorrow. I have to get in touch with John S about it. We're getting together at the Ronkonkoma station at about 9:30 to catch the 10 am train in. We haven't decided where we want to go yet. We were thinking of hitting the wax museum in Times Square or something. We'll see.

movie review
I watched Chicago tonight with Mom. I'm still singing "All That Jazz".

Renée Zellwegger, Cathrine Zeta-Jones, and Richard Gere were surprisingly good. It's rare you find good actors and actresses nowadays that can dance and carry a tune. Or at least, ones that are willing to showcase that on the big screen.

You also got a good shot of Christine Baranski playing the reporter, and a cameo of Chita Rivera (the original Velma Kelly). Rivera shows up as one of the first people Zellwegger talks to after her character's arrested.

Jones plays Velma Kelly, a songstress in 1920's Chicago that gets accused of murdering her sister and husband. Zellwegger plays Roxie Hart, a girl that wants to get into showbiz, but goes about it all the wrong way. She kills her 'would-be agent' and gets sent to jail where she meets Velma. Queen Latifa plays the warden of the women's cell block, and isn't exactly there as a straight laced law officer. "Mama", as she's called, is willing to help out her girls, for a price. In comes Gere, playing a hot shot defense lawyer, who always wins his cases.

The show goes through a series of songs and cuts between real life and the daydreaming show world of Roxie's imagination. With some really great performances in dancing, memorable songs, and a nice twist of humor, this movie hits my top list. Call it the frustrated performer in me, but I really liked it.

grades
Well, I got a 90 on my Intro test. I probably could have done better, but I'm not a terminology type of person. This means I'll have to kill on my presentation. {{sigh}}

i have to watch an art film?
I'm still ticked about the 88 in history. I'm going to have to find a way to pull that up if I want to maintain my GPA. I'm determined to graduate with it now.

Anyway, we had to watch Moulin Rouge in class last Thursday. It was the older one about Toulouse-Lautrec, not the remake with Nicole Kidman and Ewan MacGreggor. Not that you could call the newer one a remake... it was a completely different story. Personally, but don't tell my teacher this, I liked the newer one better. It was a bit more fun. This older one, which my teacher touted as the second greatest art film ever, was really dry for me.

we're doing what now?
So, Estelle called me Friday while I was at work. I called her back when I got home and we were chatting for a bit when she asked if I wanted to hang out. I had already promised Mike I would call him later, so she said to invite him along. I'm thinking... 'he's at Hofstra...' She said the group of them were going to Jillian's for the night. So, I was like, Okay... That I can handle.

So, I call Mike, get directions to his dorm (he doesn't have a car at the moment), and set a time to pick him up.

Estelle calls back. They're not going to Jillian's. They're going to a movie, because it's closer to home and Estelle's mom doesn't want to have the baby too late. They're going to a 10:15 showing of Underworld.

If I left at that precise moment, I wouldn't have gotten to Hofstra by 10:15. So, now I'm stuck. Do I keep my plans with Mike, or do I go out and see Underworld with everyone else? I've wanted to see it, too.

Estelle and I decide we'll hang out tomorrow, and I go get Mike. The LIE was closed earlier than the sign said (it said exit 40, but they closed it three exits before that), so I got stuck in major traffic before getting to Northern State. But, I got it figured out okay and was only about 15 minutes late.

I meet up with Mike, and told him what was going on. He suggested a movie. I was okay with that, but the theatre (as it was now about 11 o'clock) didn't have much left showing for the day. We went to Friday's instead for some snack type stuff, and then I dropped him off back at his dorm and headed home.

impressions
This was the first time I've hung out with Mike. He's okay. I can talk to him about a lot, but that's usually how I am when I first meet someone. I think I'm *too* talkative to make up for the fact that I feel shy.

He's a pretty nice guy, and I wouldn't mind hanging out with him again. I'm not sure if it'll go more than friends, though.

irony, gotta luv it
Turns out that the other group ended up doing the same thing. They got to the theatre, found that Underworld was sold out, and went to Friday's at Smithaven Mall instead. No where near the Friday's Mike and I were at, but I found the irony of the situation very amusing.

last night's plans
So, as planned, we hung out last night at Estelle's. No strip club like we had originally planned, though. Oh well... I doubt that place is going out of business anytime soon. LOL.

Anyway, Estelle was having trouble calling people, so I left a message on Michelle's machine about our change in plans and to give Estelle's number a call for directions if she needed them. We had pizza, which the baby ate some, despite being a pain in the butt to get him started eating. LOL. But, he was pretty good about it. Then, we went out to Jason's store to rent a movie. The baby was really happy to see Jason. We stopped at 7-11 on the way back to grab some milk, soda, ice cream, and cookies for the baby. The stuff they had at Hollywood Video had a lot of chocolate on them and that would have been majorly messy for a 2-year-old...

Estelle put the baby to bed and we made ice cream soda floats. We rented something called Coupling. It's a British sitcom that's the basis for the new American sitcom, Couples. I recognized a lot of the jokes from the coming attractions I've seen for the American version. It looked really funny, but I'm sure someone will find a way to screw it up in the transition.

yay!!!
And the Broncos are winning again!!! {{dances}}

snapple repeat... again
I got a Snapple from 7-11 last night... It had #140 again, where Holland is the only country with a national dog... Figures.
